Fundada por elo guitarrista Jimmmy Page, el cual integro al bajista John Paul Jones, quien lo conocio en trabajos anteriores con su antigua banda, el cantante Robert Plant y a unos de los mejores bateristas de la historia musical, John Bonham.
Su música se caracteriza por incluir elementos del rock n roll, blues, soul y musica celta. Y una gran influencia de Tolkien en sus letras.
